Occupational Health Advisor jobs & career guide

Occupational Health Advisors (OHAs) are registered nurses who keep people healthy and safe at work. They assess whether someone is fit for their role, advise managers on adjustments and return-to-work plans, and run health surveillance for people exposed to noise, dust, chemicals or vibration. It is the role we place more than any other — permanent, contract and temporary, across OH providers, in-house teams and the NHS.

What does an Occupational Health Advisor do?

  • Management referrals and sickness-absence case management, with clear written reports for HR and managers
  • Pre-placement and fitness-for-work assessments, including safety-critical medicals
  • Health surveillance programmes — audiometry, spirometry, skin checks and HAVS
  • Advising on reasonable adjustments, phased returns and long-term health conditions
  • Telephone and video assessments (many roles are now hybrid or fully remote)
  • Supporting clinical governance, audit and SEQOHS standards

Where they work

OHAs work for national and regional OH providers (often covering several client contracts), in-house OH departments in large employers, and NHS Trust staff-health teams. Provider roles tend to offer variety and remote case-management options; in-house roles offer one organisation and deeper relationships; NHS roles follow Agenda for Change banding.

How to become an Occupational Health Advisor

  • NMC registration as a nurse is essential (Part 1 adult nursing is most common)
  • Many OHAs hold an OH qualification — a certificate, diploma or degree in occupational health nursing
  • SCPHN (Occupational Health) on Part 3 of the NMC register is the senior qualification and opens lead and manager roles
  • Plenty of employers hire experienced nurses without an OH qualification and fund it — typically starting as a screening or trainee OH nurse
  • Case-management experience and confident report writing matter as much as the qualification

Occupational Health Advisor — common questions

What does a typical week look like for an OHA?

Usually a mix of management referrals and case reviews, health surveillance or medicals, report writing and follow-ups. Many provider roles are hybrid, with remote case-management days.

Do I need an OH qualification to become an Occupational Health Advisor?

Not always. Many providers hire NMC-registered nurses into trainee or screening roles and fund the OH certificate, diploma or SCPHN once you are in. An OH qualification does widen your options and pay.

What is the difference between an OH Advisor and an OH Nurse?

In practice the titles overlap. "OH Advisor" usually means a nurse who manages their own caseload and writes management reports; "OH Nurse" can also cover screening or trainee posts. Job content matters more than the title.

Are there remote Occupational Health Advisor jobs?

Yes — remote case management and telephone assessment roles are common, especially with national providers. Health surveillance and medicals are site- or clinic-based.

What is SCPHN (OH)?

Specialist Community Public Health Nursing in occupational health — a post-registration qualification recorded on Part 3 of the NMC register. It is the recognised senior OH nursing qualification.
